Pecola Breedlove, a young eleven-year-old black girl, prays every day for beauty. Mocked by other children for the dark skin, curly hair, and brown eyes that set her apart, she yearns for the blond hair and blue eyes that she believes will allow her to finally fit in. Yet as her dreams grow more fervent, her life slowly starts to disintegrate in the face of adversity and strife.

Shelter Island Book Club - The Stationary Store
Tuesday, April 15th, 4:30 pm (at the Historical Society)

Roya, an idealistic teenager living amid the political upheaval of 1953 Teheran, finds a literary oasis in kindly Mr. Fakhri’s stationery store stocked with books, pens, and jewel-colored inks. Then Mr Fakhri introduces Roya to his other favorite customer, Bahran, who has a burning passion for justice. Political violence erupts and they are separated until 60 years later, fate gives Roya the chance to ask the questions that have haunted her.

Thursday, March 13th, 5:00 pm (at the Rams Head Inn)

Silent Book Club is a global community of readers who gather together to read in quiet camaraderie. At Silent Book Club, there’s no assigned reading, it’s BYO Book. Join us for Silent Book Club at the Rams Head Inn, take a seat by the fire, and grab a drink or a snack, if you choose to do so. Get comfortable with the book of your choice and settle in for an hour of silent reading. At the end of the hour, attendees can socialize—or not!
