Shelter Island Library Book Club
The Ride of Her Life by Elizabeth Letts
Tuesday, March 11th, 4:30 pm (at the SI Historical Society)
The Shelter Island Book Club, led by Suzanne Louer, reads works of fiction and nonfiction with an emphasis on well-regarded contemporary fiction.
In 1954, Annie Wilkins, a sixty-three-year-old farmer from Maine, set out on a remarkable journey. She had no money, no family, and had just lost her farm. Her doctor had given her only two years to live. Despite this, Annie wanted to see the Pacific Ocean before she died. She ignored her doctor’s advice to move into a charity home. Instead, she bought an old brown horse named Tarzan, put on men’s work clothes, and started her journey south in mid-November, hoping to avoid the snow. Annie had little experience outside her small town; she didn’t even have a map. But she did have her horse, a loyal dog, and a strong belief that people would be kind to her as a stranger.
This program will take place in person at the Shelter Island Historical Society.
