The Shelter Island Public Library will be closed for construction activities starting Monday, February 27 at 1:00 pm through Monday, March 5. The library will re-open on Tuesday, March 6 at 10:00 am. So stock up before February 25 on books and movies for the construction holiday.”

No overdue fines will be charged to your library account while the library is closed.

Clay Figurines made by the Waura tribe in the Amazon area of Brazil

The Waura tribe is one of the thirteen tribes that live in the Xingu reservation around the river Xingu in the norther part of the state of Mato Grosso in Brazil.

Their homes are made of sticks and grass and are placed around a central square. The men go out in the jungle and hunt with blowgun and bows and arrows for tapir, wild boar, deer, monkeys and rodents. Birds are shot for their feathers which are used for their beautiful ritual headdresses and other ornaments. The women grind manoic and other roots for their food and gather edible fruits and berries. They also make these clay figurines – images of their daily life and the animals they are surrounded by – perhaps as plaything for their children.

Unfortunately, this ancient native way of life is changing fast. Many tribal lands are being threatened by religious cults, colonists, ranchers, loggers and the petroleum industry.

Shelter Islander, Kirsten Lewis, bought these figurines over a period of several years from a Waura Indian who came to Sao Paulo once a year to sell the handicrafts of his village. This was about 25 years ago. She doubts they are still making them now.
