Brenda Bergman was elected to the Board of Trustees in 1996 and currently serves as its Vice President. She is the long-time Chairwoman of the Library’s annual and popular “Book and Author” Luncheon and is actively involved in organizing numerous other events. In addition to her Library activities, she has been president of the Shelter Island PTSA, has served as a Director of Habitat for Humanity, a deacon of the Presbyterian Church as well as a member of its choir and of the Island’s Community Chorus. A native of Peekskill, NY, Brenda holds a degree in French and English from SUNY Albany and taught in several Suffolk County schools before moving to Shelter Island with her family in 1967. Her son Erik and daughter, Anja, are both graduates of the Shelter Island Public School, where she taught French until 1972. She also taught French, English, Spanish and social studies in Tuckahoe and Southampton before her retirement in l992 and now tutors students of all ages. An enthusiastic traveler, she has visited nearly every country in Europe and Scandinavia and been to Russia, Turkey, Mexico, Canada and South America, where she recently visited Machu Picchu with her daughter.
