William G. Martens has been a Shelter Island homeowner since 2001. After retiring from a distinguished career in international banking, he now makes his home here and in Darien, Connecticut, where he spends the winter. His familiarity and affection for the East End reaches back to his and his wife’s grandparents, both of whom bought homes in Sag Harbor in the 1920s. His four children and many grandchildren love visiting him and his wife, Virginia, a retired English Teacher. Bill and Jini share a passion for travel, read voraciously and are avid book group members.
A native of Chatham, New Jersey, Bill is a graduate of Dartmouth College and served in the U.S. Navy for four years as an officer on a destroyer. He holds a M.B.A. degree from the Amos Tuck School and worked for Citigroup for most of his career including ten years spent living in Asia. He is on the Board of Directors of The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), a non-profit leader in international education and cultural exchange. He looks forward to further supporting the education and growth of Shelter Islanders – young and old – through work as a library trustee.
