Peter Farrar grew up in Hingham, Massachusetts and attended Emerson College in Boston. After college, he worked up the advertising ladder at two department stores ultimately becoming advertising director – mail-order division, of Neiman-Marcus. This launched a forty year career in marketing and advertising.
In 1982 he and his wife Carol started their own advertising firm “Farrar & Farrar” in New York City which focused on the marketing needs of fashion retailers and specialized in mail-order catalogs. Their numerous clients included trusted names such as Burberry, FAO Schwarz, Godiva, and Pierre Deux.
For thirty years their successful firm was involved in all aspects of marketing including consumer research, brand positioning, collateral development, store visuals, events, e-commerce websites, social marketing, PR, and television and print advertising. In addition, they helped their clients with competitive marketplace analysis, defining marketing opportunities, enhancing brand equity, setting goals and originating tactical creative concepts, and bringing them to fruition.
Peter and family have been coming to Shelter Island since 1981 and purchased their Shorewood home in 1990 where they spent summers and weekends with their three children.
In 2008 they sold their agency and moved to Shelter Island full time. Peter pursued his passion for health and fitness and now works as a certified personal trainer. He looks forward to devoting his time and energy to the community – particularly as a member of the Library board.
