Don Dunning is a Long Island native who came to Shelter Island in 2005 from Seaford. He brings the skills and knowledge acquired as a partner in a successful construction business as well as a dedication to community service evidenced by long and distinguished volunteerism with Lions Club International and Visions/Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
When he moved to Shelter Island, Don launched Don Dunning Carpentry Services and joined Griffing and Collins Real Estate and transferred his Lions Club membership here. His work with the Lions dates to 1985 in Seaford where he held every office in that organization, including president. It was the Lions who introduced Don to Visions, where he served as a Director for 15 years before his retirement in 2010 and who named him “Volunteer of the Year in the early 1990s,” His work for that organization garnered an “Everyday Hero” profile – “A Ray of Light for the Blind” — in Newsday.
Prior to having started Dunning Bros. construction, Inc. with his brother in 1969 — and serving as well as its treasurer for 36 years — Don taught high school and junior high school science in Mineola and Wantaugh.
